I wanted to recreate the Obscurus VFX from Fantastic Beasts in Unreal Engine 5 using only real-time rendering. To support different use cases, I created two versions of the effect — one designed for cinematics and another optimized for gameplay.
Rather than relying on hundreds of thousands of particles like the film’s original simulation, my goal was to achieve a similar visual impact using more efficient, game-friendly techniques.
Created in Unreal Engine 5, with environment assets sourced from Quixel.
